For Anthology DVD, in 2003, they resorted to a vinyl with the original BBC broadcast. Shortly thereafter, however, they discovered that the BBC still held the original tapes which they hastened to acquire for use in Love and MMT DVD / Blu-Ray 2012 "True Stereo" remixes

1967 MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR FILM Video remixes variations

The original Mono soundtrack contains a unique early remix of Magical Mystery Tour song. The first home-video Stereo release (VHS 1988) have all tracks ‘remastered’ and four tracks also newly remixed by Ron Furmanek (RS 88) The DVD 1997 returns back and oddly presents a badly mastered stereo 1987 soundtrack (possibly even a vinyl needledrop). The 2012 DVD/Blu-Ray release, opportunely, contains all new Stereo remixes (created by Giles Martin) Some Original Mono soundtrack’s songs (but not all) can be found in “Magical Mystery Year Deluxe” (PURPLE CHICK 2007) several sourced from “Another Tracks Of Magical Mystery Tour” (SWEET ZAPPLE 2002). All songs from VHS/Laserdisc 1988 appearead for the first time in “It's All In The Mind Y'know” (BEAT 1996), many of these, -upgraded-, are in “Magical Mystery Year Deluxe”, “Another Tracks Of Magical Mystery Tour” and “Magical Mystery Tour Back To Basics” (HELTER SKELTER 2014), but the complete soundtrack is available only in “Magical Mystery Tour - VHS HiFi Soundtrack” (RMW 2011) Audio from DVD 1997 is not circulating on bootleg. The new DVD/Blu-Ray Stereo remix 2012 can be found in “Magical Mystery Tour Back To Basics” and “Magical Mystery Tour Songtrack” (MAXWELL EDISON 2015). The complete soundtrack 2012 is available in “Magical Mystery Sessions Vol 3” (FAB! 2012)

1968 ACROSS THE UNIVERSE recording process

The details of the Across The Universe recordings have always been a difficult element to analyze; the nebulosity of the official data and the abundant number of official and unofficial circulating versions -distributed in more than 2 years- made it almost impossible to extricate oneself from the countless hypotheses: actually all scholars contradict each other, or they get confused, wrong or imprecise on some details. In 2018, finally, with the booklet of the White Album 50th other details were made public; some are crucial infos that contribute greatly to the recomposition of this enigmatic puzzle represented by the recordings sequence and elements of Across The Universe (in its various versions). Some smaller details still escape and some fringe doubts remain, but in general, the sessions of Across The Universe can today, and comprehensively, be summarized as follows: 4 Tracks (3?) 4 Feb 68 Tk 1 Tk 1 Ac Guitar Tk 2 Tk 2 Ac. Across The Universe chronology of official releases and unofficial appearances > Tk 8 ‘Hums Wild’ and TK7 RS3 by Glyn Johns have both two sources: Acetate and Tape. > In A/B Road - January 7 1969 it can be heard that, during the sessions at Twickenham, the Beatles played back an acetate with RM2. RM2 was also scheduled for inclusion on the cancelled 1969 Yellow Submarine EP Across The Universe remixes and main official releases

1968 WHAT'S THE NEW MARY JANE versions and variations

Distinguishing the various versions of this chaotic but not unplanned song is an almost impossible undertaking, and even Lewisohn and Winn being faced with nebulous and contradictory data, they have not been able to solve all the uncertainties: the main problem is to fit the list of attested recordings (and the acetates obtained) by Lewisohn, Barrett and Winn with the various bootleg versions published, often characterized by unknown sources, arbitrary and highly variable names/assignments such as 'RS2', 'Edit', 'Single', 'Sparse mix', 'Dense mix', 'Intermediate mix' etc. ... reference source May 1968

ANTHOLOGY 3 CD

> RS6 is not an EDIT of RS5 as reported by Lewisohn (if anything it’s an Edit of RS4), and it’s not even the mysterious ‘’Copy with Simultaneous Editing’’ cited by Lewisohn (as hypothesized by Winn), the latter have actually recently surfaced on a Mono Acetate (RMx from RS4+RS5) Best source The recording history of WTNMJ begins with the so-called "Kinfauns Demo", recorded with only vocals, acoustic guitars (and tambourine) in George's house, in which you can hear how the structure of the song was already perfectly delineated.

Super Deluxe Edition 2018

In the EMI studios, John, Yoko and George (also present Mal Evans), decided to record WTNMJ: this time with the addition of a long 'coda' of ‘experimental’ music. With George on acoustic guitar and John on piano, they recorded four takes: the first was 2:35, the second 3:45, the third was a false start, and the fourth (final) take reached 6:35.

Super Deluxe Edition 2018

Two Stereo remixes were created: (RS1 ) and (RS2). No copy were created or taken, however, in 1982 a copy of one of these remixes, characterized by the overdubs track almost inaudible and a ‘stopped’ finale (5:45), were realized by John Barrett and later released in the bootleg “Another Session Plus”. Bare It All Three new Stereo remixes were created: (RS1), (RS2) and (RS3). These remixes are characterized by song’s full length (6:40) and John's exclamation in the finale: "Let's hear it, before we get taken away!" and, again, the track with overdubs with volume almost turned down to zero A copy of all three remixes were made and delivered to John. These remixes were subsequently released, respectively in the bootlegs "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Miscellaneous Tracks" and "Unsurpassed Master 4", the differences between the remixes are minimal and they could even be copies of the same remix (in any case still from 11 Sept 1969) but the slight differences are confirmed by Lewisohn: “only John's lead vocal placed at different points in the stereo” Strawberry Fields Forever Great Scott! It's... The Beatles The Beatles Deluxe Edition (Purple Chick) It’s a full length remix (6:40), with audible overdub track, although in certain points this increases cacophony. In the finale you only hear "Let's hear it-” Last Laquers It’s the longer remix (7:05), it has audible overdub track and simultaneous 'live' overdubs from John, Yoko, Mal Evans and others present. This short 'rough' remix (2:30) sounds like a ‘slice’ of RS4: it begins abruptly at a casual point , skipping the first two minutes. After one minute there’s another minute of cut before connecting to the minute and half of the final 'ringtone' This Mono remix is essentially the 'overlap' of the two remixes RS4 and RS5 (combined with various editing and 'displacement' of clips of the two remixes) The remix obtained was in turn 'edited' and divided into the two sides of the Acetate: Side A 4:05, Side B 1:56 Complete Acetate Collection (Misterclaudel) Published in various bootlegs as early as 1972, this "short" Remix is an EDIT of RS4 and RS5 and could be the final product of these 26 Nov sessions: the B side of the programmed single. But finally, this official release of WTNMJ was also canceled. Complete Acetate Collection (Misterclaudel) The last remix of WTNMJ was made in 1984 by Geoff Emerick, who started working on WTNMJ in order to insert it in the scheduled album "Sessions", creating a 6:05 remixed and edited version Turn Me On Dead Man The John Barrett Tapes Early version (A Collection Of Unreleased Albums) (Misterclaudel) Final “Sessions” version (A Collection Of Unreleased Albums) (Misterclaudel) Anthology version ANTHOLOGY 3 Itunes

1968 I’ M SO TIRED ‘Monitor Mixes’ Sources comparison

Recordings of what appear to be a ‘test’ mixing session of I’m So Tired began to circulate in 1991. The tape contains several similar (and alternate) rough mixes and playbacks, some repeated. Over the years these recordings have appeared in several bootleg, bettering in quality and completeness. Purple Chick’s ‘White Album Deluxe’ (2007) contains the enhanced and pitch corrected version of Control Room Monitor Mixes (YELLOW DOG 1993). Arrive Without Aging (VIGOTONE 1993) comprises only segments ‘b’, ‘c’ and ‘a’ (the “Isolation 7-8 Remix”), hence the comparison below is between original Control Room Monitor Mixes and the later The Ballad Of John And Yoko (IDOL MIND 2012) The illustration uses Purple Chick’s remixes’ ‘naming’.

a: ‘’Isolation 7-8’’, TBOJAY includes only the final 15 seconds of this remix

b: George comment stops on “second time of so…”.

c: In succeeding short interrupted piece, tape stops on John’s “I haven’t…”

> The segment b-c are repeated twice in TBOJAY

d1: In CRMM is followed by d2 and e in sequence

> This segment is repeated twice in TBOJAY; one is followed by e, one by d2

d2: tape rolled back

e: short interrupted piece, tape stops on John’s “I ha…”

f: George comment stops on “second time of…”.

g: longest interrupted piece, unique of CRMM

x: fragment of Organ, unique of TBOJAY

With Phil Spector everything changed: there was nothing that reminded of the original "Get Back" album concept anymore. Spector put a lot of work into Let It Be, for many songs he took different takes as well as remixing, shortening and editing like he felt he had to.

(Take 07) (Take 09) (lowered pitch) (Take 07) RS 03 The Get Back/Let It Be sessions, "DDSI" Numbers Explained In 1994 Doug Sulpy and Ray Schweighardt published a book that summarized The Beatles recording sessions of January 1969 for what was to become the Let It Be album. This book was called, Drugs, Divorce, and a Slipping Image. Within this book each chapter was devoted to a day of recording, giving details of each day, every song or snippet of song is given a unique sequential number, therefore the first song recorded on the 4th of January is number 4.1 ... and the 12th song on the 31st of January is 31.12 within the book. That reference number was the DDSI Number. This means that each recording within these sessions could be referenced easily, and for detail one can look at the book. (Graham Calkin, JPGR, 2010) In this collection, where "DDSI Number" appears, this is referring to "Complete Beatles' Audio Guide", by Doug Sulpy, 2006.

1969 GET BACK COMPILATION ‘1 WBCN’

In summer 1969, copies of the acetate with ‘compilation 1’ made their way to America and soon tape copies were aired by a number of local radio stations. The WBCN radio broadcast was recorded by a listener and in the early seventies became the source for several vinyl bootlegs . Kum Back was the first (1969). Two other significant early releases were Get Back To Toronto (I.P.F. Records) and Get Back (Lemon Records). These early vinyl releases do not feature any of DJ dialogue from the broadcast. More recently (1993) the ‘’listener's reel tape’’ was the source for the Vigotone’s CD Posters, Incense and Strobe Candles (including DJ comments and commercials from the original airing) and WBCN Get Back Reference Acetate from Yellow Dog (de-clicked and de-noised and including only short pieces of the DJ

1969 GET BACK COMPILATION ‘1 ACETATE’

In 2012 Idol Mind Productions releases Untouched - Off Elektra Acetate, sourced from an acetate containing compilation 1 (the ‘Elektra acetate’: ‘An extremely rare audio source directly ripped from the Elektra Records acetate disc named “UNTOUCHED”, which the producer of Let It Be had as a referential material’). The biggest problem with this source is that the acetate is in fairly poor condition and very noisy so this release features two CDs, one with the “Raw Version” and one de-clicked and de-noised. While the Disc 2 does sound better, not surprisingly, within a week of the release of the Untouched discs, there were already two upgrades: Untouched (Revision A) (PetSounds Productions) Derived from the raw source on Disc 1 of Untouched -, Off Elektra Acetate. Disc 1 contains a newly de-clicked, phase-corrected, and speed-corrected version. Disc 2 has the same tracks de-noised and the three missing parts in them patched up from other sources Get Back: The Elektra Acetate (Helter Skelter): Also derived from the raw source on Disc 1 of Untouched -, Off Elektra Acetate. In this release no noise reduction has been used, ‘’but instead painstakingly de-clicked, de-popped, and de- crackled each track one-by-one, putting the integrity of the music above anything else’’. All of the stereo elements that were missing from this acetate from the Yellow Dog disc were also added. The tracks were pitch, phase and level corrected, as well as un-doing the peak limiting applied to the original disc. In 2019 MasterJedi released the CD-R The Beatles - The WBCN Acetate, derived from Untouched - Off Elektra Acetate (Idol Minds) with edit pieces from Posters Incense and Strobe Candles (Vigotone). Great care was taken to align both sources in speed, frequency response and phase response. This permitted patching the missing pieces back into place, It also allowed the severe damage which occurred to the acetate to be meticulously repaired. The Intro to Get Back, which was also missing from the Idol Minds source, was patched from the Vigotone source, The material is duplicated twice, once with no click removal, and again using a combination of 2 different click removal programs (Adobe Audition CS6 and ClickRepair). The median of both outputs and the original ensured that only those clicks that both programs were in agreement on were removed.

1969 GET BACK COMPILATIONS: ‘1 TAPE’ AND 1,5 ‘OLDIES’

In 1991, some of Compilation 1 tracks surfaced along with a new set of songs; the "Oldies" compilation (Compilation 1,5 Oldies), from what appeared to be a tape source, on the CD release Celluloid Rock (Yellow Dog). All tracks are in Mono (where as the WBCN acetate is in Stereo). In 2000, these recordings appeared again (and still in Mono) on the CD Get Back: John Barrett's Reel (label unknown), in slightly better quality and featuring longer intros and outros. It's highly dubious this is actually from a Barrett tape (all known Barrett mixes are stereo. These are mono) and both releases might even be sourced from an acetate, but probably they are mono tape dubs of reels E69738 and E69739: perhaps, somewhere down the line, someone made a fold-down mono copy and that's what circulates today.

Six ‘Compilation 1’ tracks (Compilation 1 TAPE A) are present either in Celluloid Rock and Get Back: John Barrett's Reel

Three ‘Compilation 1’ tracks; Teddy Boy, Two Of Us and Dig A Pony (Compilation 1 TAPE B) appear only in Celluloid Rock, with a ‘fake stereo reverb effect’ applied. In addition, on Celluloid Rock also appeared the longest circulating excerpt of Dig It. The five jams contained in “Oldies” compilation also appear, often from various other sources (Movie soundtrack, Boardroom tapes, Barrett tapes), in numerous other bootlegs, but I’ve Got A Feeling 27.84 (with false start) appears exclusively on “Oldies”

1969 GET BACK COMPILATIONS: ‘2 WKBW’ AND ‘2 OPD’

In September 1969, an US Radio (WKBW in Buffalo) broadcast a tape of this compilation. The tape was sourced from an early production acetate that leaked out of Apple, and, as it happened before, in short time it fell into the hands of the bootleggers. Unfortunately this tape features only one channel of the stereo image. Few months after the broadcast, two bootlegs surfaced that contained the same recordings that was used for the WKBW broadcast. The first release was O.P.D. (label unknown) and featured the entire acetate. The second release was titled The Silver Album Of The World's Greatest (Jarris Records) which contained several songs but not the entire acetate. Since both bootlegs feature none of the DJ dialog heard in the broadcast and feature only one channel of stereo, the bootlegs can surely be sourced directly back to the tape used by WKBW. In 2003, the original WKBW broadcast surfaced on a bootleg CD-R titled WKBW Exclusive! The August 1969 Broadcast Of Get Back . The CD-R features a listener's off-air home recording of the WKBW For a long time it was commonly believed that Glyn had made only three compilations of Get Back, so this represents an unique (fourth) compilation; the prototype of Compilation 3 . Not even Mark Lewisohn or John Barrett make note of it. Recordings of this acetate appear to have not surfaced anywhere else other than the three ‘Mono/ One channel’ releases noted above. This second compilation differs from compilation 3 in that there are a few tidbits of different dialog and, more importantly, different edits of "Get Back" and "Dig It".

1969 GET BACK COMPILATION ‘3 ACETATE’

This compilation, unlike the first two compilations, was never broadcast; it surfaced in the 1970s from both an acetate and a tape source The first bootleg appearance of ‘Compilation 3’ was in 1974, followed, over the years, by several quality improved releases. In 1991, Yellow Dog Records introduced a ‘de-clicked’ and ‘de-noised’ CD version of the acetate titled Get Back and 22 Other Songs.

1969 GET BACK COMPILATION ‘3 TAPE’

From 1986(?) several vinyl releases featured the tape- sourced version, often accompanied by a very high quality package. In 1994, some of the tape-sourced ‘Compilation 3’ tracks made its CD debut on As Nature Intended (Vigotone) In 2000, ‘Compilation 3’ surfaced in a complete form as a bonus disc in the massive 17 disc Get Back-Sessions Box Thirty Days (Vigotone) In 2019 MasterJedi released the CD-R All I Want Is… derived mostly from Thirty Days Disc 17 and supplemented by Get Back and 22 Other Songs which was more complete in a couple spots.

1969 GET BACK COMPILATION 4

Despite two surfaced acetates that appear to contain this compilation, recordings of ‘Compilation 4’ from acetates have never appeared on bootlegs. No copies of this compilation slipped out for thirty years, but in summer of 1999 the second (and final) Glyn Johns’ compilation contemporaneously appeared on three bootlegs, taken not from an acetate but from cassette dubs that John Barrett made of reel AR16991/2. Get Back With Don't Let Me Down And 9 Other Songs - The Glyn Johns Final Compilation (Vigotone) Vigotone’s release doesn’t fully respect the original ‘Compilation 4’ Barrett tape, since some little trimmed parts in Save The Last Dance For Me and For You Blue (originally present in the Barrett tape) appear ‘restored’ Get Back – 2nd mix (Strawberry) True Masters (Roaring Mouse/Geritol) In 2015 MasterJedi released the CD-R Bare It All, containing the complete collection of John Barrett’s recordings. Disc 2 contains the ‘restored’ Barrett’s tabe dub of Compilation 4, derived from True Masters (Roaring Mouse)

1969 FOR YOU BLUE George’ s vocal variants

The ‘Official’ version of For You Blue was recorded on 25 January 1969, nonetheless, in January 1970, George re-recorded his vocals. The album Let It Be features solely the‘new’ vocals but in the various preceding Get Back compilations we can find the old vocal or both vocals alternating. Naked have new vocals and (in some points)’ electronically’ modified vocals

Comparison between remixes contained in US Hey Jude/The Beatles Again LP (1970), first non-export UK Hey Jude LP (1979) and Hey Jude CD from “The US Albums Box” (2014) standard indicates Standard UK Stereo > Rain, Lady Madonna, Revolution and Hey Jude were issued in Stereo for the first time; until then they had only been mixed in Mono, so the Stereo remixes of these songs were created specifically for this album. Since then, these Rain and Hey Jude remixes became the standard stereo remixes. Lady Madonna and Revolution presents a slightly different mastering from 1973’s mastering of these remixes (Blue Album), which would become the Stereo standard remix > In the vinyl albums Paperback Writer has reversed channels. US Albums’s CD 2014 features the standard version (Remastered 2009) 1970 1979 2014

1973 RED ALBUM remixes variations

THE REMIX VARIATIONS OF THE RED & BLUE ALBUMS

These 2 compilations, released in 1973, a bit because of contractual obligations but above all to respond to the quadruple bootleg LP "Alpha Omega" which (thanks also to radio and TV advertising) was achieving excellent sales results. These compilations contain some rare variations and there are also notable differences between the various releases: UK Vinyl 73, US Vinyl 73, CD 93, CD 2010 and Vinyl 2014 Vinyl 1973 UK UK edition of the Red Album featured some variations: a remastered version of the 1966 Fake Stereo remix of She Loves You, the version of I Feel Fine with the 'whispered intro’ (present only in first pressings. In subsequent ones this 'whispered intro’ was edited out) the US version of Day Tripper [RS1], different from the UK version [RS2] released on Oldies Nowhere Man and Girl were ‘adjusted’ in balance Vinyl 1973 US The US edition of the Red Album, instead, presents variations in nearly every songs : Capitol used their own mastertapes (quickly picking up what they found) and further reworked them, rebalancing channels in many tracks and reversing channels in others. In Capitol’s archives there were also significant lacks like the stereo versions of A Hard Days Night and Ticket To Ride, here issued in Mono Also of note is I Feel Fine released in Mono: the Mono US version still has an exaggerated reverb but, after all, significantly less than the US Stereo version, which (in 1973) was probably considered unpublishable. Other rarities are the US remix of We Can Work It Out [RS1] and the US version of Help! with the "James Bond" intro CD 1993 In this remastered edition, the 'Fake Stereo' remixes of Love Me Do and She Loves You were replaced by Mono versions The remix of She Loves You was also fixed. The impeccable Mono version was preferred in the case of Please Please Me. From Me To You is also in Mono (The ‘Harmonica intro’ version) Peculiarities of this release are the versions with the modified balance (narrowing) of Can't Buy Me Love and especially All My Loving which presents a marked ‘centered’ Stereo remix Another difference compared to the 'classic' UK 73 version concerns the different songs taken from Help! and Rubber Soul, here replaced by the 'Remix 87' versions (CD 1987) CD 2010 Apparently a copy of the previous one, instead, all the versions are the Remastered Stereo 2009 ones, except for Love Me Do, Please Please Me, From Me To You and She Love You in Mono, and the usual group of songs taken from Help! and Rubber Soul, also here replaced by the 'Remix 87' versions (CD 1987) All My Loving, Can't Buy Me Love return in 'Wide Stereo', having been used the 2009 Remasters Vynil 2014 Faithful reproduction of the 'classic' UK 73 version (with Day Tripper US Remix etc. etc) except for Love Me Do and She Loves You here in Mono. Please Please Me (correctly) returns to stereo

1973 BLUE ALBUM remixes variations

Vinyl 1973 UK All remixes are 'Standard', the only peculiarity is the (mandatory) fade-in at the beginning of A Day In The Life Vinyl 1973 US The American edition of the Blue Album shows the usual balance adjustments by Capitol in several songs, but also interesting remixes such as the (unique) US Stereo Remixes of Strawberry Fields Forever and I Am The Walrus. Hello Goodbye is inexplicably in Mono despite the publication (by Capitol itself) of the legitimate stereo version in MMT, six years earlier CD 1993 All remixes are 'Standard', the only peculiarity is the 'clean' beginning of A Day In The Life CD 2010 Also this formally copy of the previous one, instead, all the versions are the Remastered Stereo 2009 ones. Here too, A Day In The Life has a 'clean' beginning. Vinyl 2014 Faithful and candid reissue of the 'classic' UK 73 version, with fade-in at the beginning of A Day In The Life

Capitol involved George Martin who reworked the stereo mastertapes for every song, reversing channels and EQuing, in some case adjusting the balancement. In UK, EMI Records initially refused Martin's ‘reworked’ Capitol’s tapes and released the double album with the original UK mixes, however, the UK ‘splitted’ 1980 reissue and its american equivalent both contain Martin’s 1976 new ‘remixes’ US & UK Rock’n’Roll Music albums include I Call Your Name [RS1#2+RS3] and Long Tall Sally [RS1#2] first UK Stereo remixes and the first release on

album of I’m Down, which also had never been issued in Stereo before, except for a Japanese EP in 1965.

Barrett’s notes report that a new Stereo remix of I’m Down were created in 1976 expressly for Rock’n’Roll Music album, the remixes are pretty identical but for some unknown reason the (Japanese Ep) 1965 remix wasn’t used anymore
