ACETATES (LACQUERS): a reference disk, cut for evaluation purposes, in a limited number of copies Acetates are almost never for sale to the general public. They can be played on any normal record player but will suffer from wear more quickly than vinyl. Some acetates are highly prized for their rarity, especially when they contain unpublished material. Acetates are usually made by dubbing from a master recording in another medium, such as magnetic tape. Within the vinyl record industry, acetates are also used for evaluating the quality of the tape-to-disc transfer. They were once a favoured medium for comparing different takes or mixes of a recording, and if pressed vinyl copies of an impending new release were not yet available, acetates were used for getting preview copies into the hands of important radio disc jockeys. Beatles’ acetates often contain a different version of the song, a different mix, or are cut at a different speed from the released version; sometimes they contain a song that has never been released at all. If the master tapes are unavailable, or have been recorded over, an acetate may be the only surviving copy of that particular piece of music.

DECCA TAPES - Monday 1 January 1962 - PETE BEST DRUMS At 11:00am, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Pete Best were auditioned by Decca staff and performed a total of fifteen songs in one hour. Epstein and the Beatles decided on a selection of songs the Beatles had performed in various clubs over the years, along with three Lennon–McCartney originals. (The Decca Tapes)
Off-line recordings during the preliminary mixing of a song.
The Beatles often recorded their sessions this way for home listening, using a portable cassette-recorder for picking up the sounds coming out of the studio monitors during mixing sessions.
By doing so, they involuntarily preserved some mixes which were subsequently lost on the EMI multi-tracks.
Recordings of performances not available as a legal release. Starting with vinyl in the 1970s, through CD issues in the late 1980s, and continuing with digital downloads in the 1990s, the Beatles have been, and continue to be, one of the most bootlegged artists. Bootleg recordings arise from a multitude of sources. The largest single source of Beatles bootleg material is the set of Nagra audio tapes from the 1969 filming of the Get Back / Let It Be rehearsal and recording sessions. A surprising number of Beatles session tapes are available on bootlegs. These range from complete or semi-complete session tapes to more fragmentary performances .

INFORMAL SESSIONS
Recording of rough performances, for reference use rather than for general public release; A way for a musician to approximate their ideas in a fixed format and to thereby pass along those ideas to record labels, record producers, or to other artists. Musicians often use demos as quick sketches to share with bandmates or simply for personal reference during the songwriting process.

For the same reason the songs contained in the Vee-Jay album’s reissues of ‘Introducing... The Beatles’ (“Songs, Pictures and
Stories of the Fabulous Beatles”, ‘’The Beatles vs the Four Seasons’’) and singles (in “The Beatles and Frank Ifield on Stage’’) are
not contemplated, being identical to the Vee-Jay versions already included

CORE SOURCES:
Since the late ’60, Beatles’ unreleased and unofficial material were available only on their numberless bootlegs, but in 1995/1996 a
great amount of ‘unreleased’ Beatles’ material (mostly demos and outtakes) was finally officialy released in in the Anthology project
Another large number of demos/outtakes was officialy released between 2017 and 2019 in the ‘’50th Anniversary’’ Editions
However, much unreleased (and essential) material still remains available uniquely on bootlegs:
The primary sources consist in Purple Chick and Helter Skelter’s CD-R collections and catalogues, but also all the new material and the essential upgrades by the latest (and best) creators/compilers/remasters like Remasters Workshop, Lord Reith, MasterJedi, Colturkey, Csnyfan etc. and, in some cases, from labels like Fab!, Misterclaudel, Secret Garden, BFB/Rapple etc. in case of multiple sources, the choice was made song-by-song, and sometimes the ‘best source’ principle was waived in favour of the subjective “pleasant or interesting listening’ criterion: that’s why, despite the undisputed technical superiority of Masterjedi works (meticulous and impeccable ‘restoring’ combined with accurate and ‘correct’ EQing), in some cases MJ’s entries are replaced or flanked by Misterclaudel’s respectives

THE SINGLES COLLECTION
(AAA Remastered 2019) Standard remixes

Official entries and relative variations included here, they comprises EVERY Recording/Mixing variation reported by Winn or Brennan plus significant updates and, in addition to these, several Mastering/Pressing variations. For example W.& B. generally consider Original Albums and CD Reissues as ‘same remix’, noticing and signalling no difference. This set is much more larger, trying to include all the releases of a specific song that sound (significantly) different, despite being the same recording, same remix etc. Naturally, when releases actually sound very same or identical, for sake of space, clarity and order, only ‘Main Releases’ will be included (as for W. & B. lists). Unofficial entries included comprises not only EVERY available ‘bootleg’ recording reported by Lewisohn/Winn/Sulpy/Unterberger but includes the latest updates. For some recordings (especially the badly reduced ones) two or more versions may be included, this is due to the difficulty of picking out a ‘best version’; for example we may have a clean heavy noisy reduced -but muddy- version and a ‘genuine’ very scratchy -but someway clearer and ‘honest’- raw version Songs and Albums are catalogued in rough order of recording (NOT Release date), and are grouped into blocks: a specific song and ALL its variants, placed all TOGETHER -in order of recording and/or release- The list usually starts with Demos/Rehearsals/Outtakes/Acetates/unused remixes etc., following with Mono Official Releases and finishing with Stereo Official Releases. (reference dates are noted, however, although approximated and simplified) Official Recording are written larger and in CAPITAL LETTERS. * UK and International Official Release “Master take” and corresponding Official Mono and Stereo Remixes are notated in purple, below song title * The source is always specified (as mentioned above, mono ones first, then stereo). * All existing mixing variants are included, as well as some significant Mastering/Pressing variants Unofficial Recording are written in smaller letters. * Whenever possible, in outtakes listing, Take, Remix and source are always specified unknown or undefined Takes or Remix are indicated with X, Y, Z, Θ, Ω and so on. Nowhere Man has 3 ‘main stereo variants’: the “Historic”, the “1987 Remix” and the “1999 Remix”, I Am The Walrus is the song with the highest number of substantial variants: 4 in Mono and 9 in Stereo! but also has -especially the “Historic Remix type”- a large number of ‘sub-variants”, mostly due to the trend of ‘narrowing’ (or in some cases rebalance) the channels separation in later vinyl releases

Despite the relative abundance of circulating Reel tapes (and rarer Cassette and 8-Track) transfers,
only some of these transfers were indicated. The reason is the generally sub-standard quality, not comparable to Vinyl or VHS/DVD transfers thus only the finest quality TAPE TRANSFERS have been considered
