1961 BEATLES & TONY SHERIDAN basic official discography

The Hamburg 1961 recordings were released in many countries in unnumbered releases, often ‘repacked ‘over the years or inserted in compilations, often along wth other bands. The following list contains the most important. First release for a given song (or song’s version) is highlighted in yellow. Playing musicians: > My Bonnie has three significant EDIT variants (along with the ‘medley’ version and the Anthology version) > ATCO releases presents two peculiar variations: Sweet Georgia Brown has a ‘vocals variant’ (Sheridan re-recorded the vocals in 1964) and Ain’t She Sweet has an overdubbed ‘added drums ‘ variant (oddly this was the version chosen for Anthology). ATCO ‘reworked’ also Take Out Some Insurance and Nobody’s Child > On numerous releases Take Out Some Insurance were listed as If You Love Me, Baby. 1961 October 23 My Bonnie (German Intro) The Saints POLYDOR NH 24673 1962 January 5 My Bonnie (English Intro) The Saints POLYDOR NH 66833 April 11 My Bonnie (English intro) The Saints DECCA 31382 April 12

I CALL YOUR NAME edits/remixes variations

I Call Your Name’s ‘backtrack’ was completed in seven takes. On take 7, John’s second vocal and Ringo’s cowbell were overdubbed. Alas, it was realized that Take 5 had the best solo, so, in producing the Mono masters, take 5’s solo was edited into take 7 For the Stereo masters, besides take 5’s solo, take 5’s intro was also edited in. While following the same general scheme, UK and US mixes have all different edits. US Stereo remix (RS1) also has more reverb. First Release Editing Variations

Vocals 1 Vocals 2+ tambourine "but now these days" "I've changedmymind" "I've opened up the doorS" Tambourine April 13 1965, EMI: Recording the backtrack of takes 1-12 (Tracks 1 and 2). On take 12, the‘best’ take, vocals were overdubbed (John + Paul & George backing) on track 3. Vocals were doubled (again John + Paul & George backing) on track 4, together with Ringo’s tambourine. A Rough Mono mix was made (RM1) April 18 1965, EMI: 3 Mono remixes, RM2, RM3 and RM4 (RM4 ‘best’), were made for use in the film, and 1 in stereo (RS1). They all went unused April 22 1965, Twickenham: Filming ‘Help!’ (using RM4 as ‘soundtrack’) May 24 1965, CTS: It was decided that vocals tracks needed to be remade. CTS Studios had 3-track tape machines, so EMI track 1 and 2 (the instrumental backtrack) were reduced to one track to left 2 tracks free for overdubbing the new vocals. A new Mono remix (RMx) was created then to be used in the film June 18 1965, EMI: Final Mono (RM4#2) and Stereo (RS2) remixes for the LPs. For the Mono remix George Martin decided to edit the intro, joining the old vocal intro and using the new CTS vocal for the rest of the song. For the Stereo remix, CTS recording had the instrumental backtrack on one track (practically in mono), so, for the Stereo remix, George Martin was forced to use the EMI’s four track recording (with ‘old vocals’) In addition to the described above 4 'historical remixes' there exist further 'modern' remixes, all in Stereo, first of all the CD 1987 remix, other remixes are the 1993 PROMO, the fragment in Anthology DVD (2003), the DVD 2007 Video remix and the brand new remix for ''1+'' (2015). In all these 'modern' remixes, the vocal part is always the ‘old vocals’.

The withdrawn MONO RUBBER SOUL ‘’LOUD CUT’’

The "Loud Cut" is the very first pressing of the UK Mono Rubber Soul, stopped after a short pressing run. George Martin wasn’t satisfied with the first cut of the album which sounded way too compressed, and thus, after few days, he decided to halt production and re-cut the master. 'Loud-cut' pressings had the matrix numbers XEX 579-1and XEX 580-1. When the production resumed, the second pressing run started with matrix XEX 579-4 / XEX 580-4 Despite the myth (and the name) the ’’Loud Cut’’ wasn’t cut particularly louder; it was just more compressed and, beside sounding somewhat substandard (but not even as terrible as they say, considering that a lot of people hear no difference), there was a risk that this could have produced distortion on cheaper turntables

US STEREO RUBBER SOUL ‘’DEEP ECHO’’

A small number of circulating copies of US Stereo Rubber Soul presents an unusual ‘echoed’ sound, the reason is that they were mastered differently, with an added layer of reverb to all the songs of the album. This became to be know as the “Deep Echo”, “Echo Enhanced”, ‘’East Coast Mix’’ or the 'Dexterized' version of US Stereo Rubber Soul (from Dave Dexter Jr., the executive of Capitol supposed originator of this alternate mastering) In ‘’The Beatles Story on Capitol Records Part 2’’, Spizer points out: "Although most of the stereo Capitol pressings of the album sound similar to the stereo British LP, some of the Capitol discs were pressed with metal parts originating from a master that is noticeably different. These records were manufactured from a master cut in New York. All the songs have additional reverb that is not present on the other Capitol pressings or on the British discs. "

1966 Alternate remix of TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS

in the withdrawn first press of MONO UK REVOLVER

A limited number of UK Mono Revolver album include a rare version, with a different remix, of Tomorrow Never Knows [RM11]: it’s the quickly withdrawn very first pressing. This has a matrix number (on side 2) of XEX 606-1 whereas the standard presses have XEX 606-2 and beyond. After the first day of pressing it was decided to replace this remix of Tomorrow Never Knows [RM11] with the ‘standard’ mix [RM8]: the production was momentarily stopped as the new masters were cut and the pressing plates were replaced. It is not known why George Martin changed his mind and decided to use the older ‘best’ Mono Remix RM8 RM11 had the vocals louder, the backward guitar solo without ADT (and missing the final guitar phrase), different effects and a longer fade-out with a prominent piano in the end.

I AM THE WALRUS Mono variants

Mono remix 23 (RM23) was the first created 'official' versions of I Am The Walrus, it was the result of a laborious EDIT, which constitutes the 'basic' Mono Master of the finished song. This remix however still has an imperfection: an 'extra’ bar before "...Yellow Matter Custard..." (due to the studio correction of a mistake by John in the ‘backtrack’, as heard in Anthology). This mono mix will be delivered to Capitol who will release it on the US Single Hello Goodbye (before being notified of the ''extra'' bar). EDIT RM23 A week later, the 'correct' single, with the 'extra' bar cut (EDIT RM23 # 1), was released in UK. This remix became the standard Mono remix and will be used also for the double MMT EP, the Film, the Mono MMT CD (Remastered 2009) and many other releases. EDIT RM23#2 For the inclusion in the US Mono MMT album, Capitol also did its 'EDIT', cutting the 'extra’ bar (EDIT RM23 # 2). Given the limits of the tecnology of the time, the two EDITs do not sound exactly the same (Capitol’s engineers cut a few hundredths of a second too long) ... anyway, from now, all subsequent versions will have the 'extra' bar cut (with the exception of the 'reconstructed' Stereo version of US RARITIES (1980) and another botched attempt in 2011 in the Target Mono Single, described below. SINGLE 2011 In 2011 Capitol released (through Target retail corporation) the reissue of the vinyl single with a cheap attempt to restore the 'extra' bar, unfortunately it was done in an amateurish way, with disastrous results: John's "Ye ... brutally cut, but still partially audible > The main distinguishing feature of every I Am The Walrus’ Mono remixes (compared to the stereo ones) is that they have two points where Ringo's drums 'disappear': the first at about 0:36, the second at 1: 18

I AM THE WALRUS Stereo variants

EDIT RS6/7 The first Stereo remix, delivered to Capitol, was a 'montage' of two remixes: the first part of the song was the Stereo remix 6 (RS6), the second part was a 'fake stereo' version of the remix Mono 22 (RM22) called RS7. This Capitol ‘hybrid’ version Stereo/Fake Stereo (RS6/7) has the peculiarities that it starts with 4 piano beats, and has the "left" drums that (as for the mono remixes) disappears for a few moments, after "I'm crying "at 1:18 ... EDIT RS25/7 In UK, and at the last moment before going to press, it was decided to redo the Stereo remix from scratch using a new Stereo remix (RS25) as the first part of the song, and the usual 'Fake Stereo' RS7 as the second part. All beautiful... but they forgot to 'shorten' the 6 beats piano intro, and mockingly, this version is what will become the Stereo official standard of I Am The Walrus (RS25/7) German Hörzu released the double EP and then the MMT album with a variant of the US Stereo remix: the intro is not cut (it has 6 piano beats, as for the UK EP), but has drums that disappears at 1:18 (as for the US Stereo remix) EDIT R 80 In 1980 Capitol (for its LP US RARITIES) created a Stereo 'reconstructed' version of the 'imperfect' Mono remix with the extra bar (US Single), ‘picking’ the extra bar from RM23 MMT VHS (EDIT RS25/RM23?) In 1988 a new remix was made by George Martin for the MMT Video release, with the piano intro necessarily 'cut' and 'reduced' to 4 beats (to match with the film / video), in this new remix the second part of the song is in true mono, instead of Fake Stereo

MMT DVD

In 1997, the standard Stereo remix RS25/7 was used for the MMT DVD release, (the piano intro was cut to 4 beats)

ANTHOLOGY DVD

In 2003 a new Stereo remix was created for Anthology DVD, finally in 'True Stereo' from the beginning to the end of the song and,-unique among the post 1971 remixes-, it has drums that disappears at 1:18 In 2006 a new 'True Stereo' remix was created for Love. In 2009 a new remix was created for the music video game Rockband, this remix is similar to the standard one but almost in mono MMT DVD 2012 Finally, in 2012, for the Blu-Ray release of MMT, Giles Martin created yet another new 'True Stereo' remix, also this with a 4 beats piano intro I Am The Walrus Stereo Main Releases I Am The Walrus Unique Stereo remixes

> US Stereo album and all Video remixes have 4 beats piano intro > In all the Stereo versions, unlike the Mono versions, the Drums between“I’m Crying” and “Sitting on a cornflakes” at 0:36 never disappear > US Stereo, German Stereo albums and Anthology DVD, have ‘Left channel drums’ disappearing at 1:18
